Our History

The Serenity Church of Charlotte was founded by Jim and Ronda Shock as the The Recovery Church on January 9, 1994 in Charlotte, NC. The Recovery Church was primarily for the purpose of helping “Recovering Persons” bridge the gap between “Recovery” and “Christianity”, making it possible for both to be important parts of their ongoing “Spiritual Walk”.

The fact is, everyone is Recovering from something (losses, hurts, disappointments, fears), and so we have broadened the original vision & outreach of The Recovery Church. As a result, The Serenity Church of Charlotte was born and we now have people coming together from a wide variety of backgrounds. Many are in some form of Recovery Program, though many are not. We welcome anybody and everybody to make us your church.

At The Serenity Church of Charlotte, we believe the Bible is both “The Word of God” and the source from which the principles of the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous were taken.

We also believe that God will “meet you where you are Spiritually”; He will accept you and love you unconditionally; and He is in the process of leading us all to becoming truly Happy, Joyous and Free through His AMAZING GRACE.
